With a school education mainly in Fife, Scotland, I started my university career with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and Physical Education at Birmingham University in 1986.

I completed a research MSc at St Andrews University and worked in different outdoor settings with young people before undertaking secondary teacher training and becoming a lecturer, firstly in psychology and outdoor pursuits and then in community sport development, at Northumbria University, from 1992.

My passion has always been in the outdoors and outdoor learning, and I have kayaked in the UK, Europe, India and Nepal. My research focuses on women’s experiences in the outdoor industry, and inclusion more broadly.

I finished my sociological PhD on women’s career identities in outdoor education in 2003, completed an MA in Academic Practice in 2010 and taught undergraduate and postgraduate students at Northumbria University in a variety of subjects before leaving my final role as Associate Professor with leadership responsibilities in teaching and learning enhancement.

I have recently joined ÌÒ×ÓÊÓƵ as a part-time online tutor in education, which enables me to continue to enjoy supporting students, work with good colleagues and spend time with family, continuing my research and my own outdoor adventures; kayaking, running and outdoor walking.
